Artificial Surfing Reefs: Coastal Protection and Tourism Benefits in Algarve (Portugal) (Abstract)

In the last decades the increase of human activities with impacts in shoreline led to a decrease of sediments necessary for coastal protection and therefore accelerating coastal erosion process. More then 20 places along the coast of Algarve are identifying with serious erosion problems threat not only the coast but compromised one of the main tourism spot in Portugal. Submerged coastal structures are widely perceived to be capable of providing beach protection, without the adverse impacts. Artificial Surfing Reef is spreading with good results around the world. Their methods and material are different from those used traditionally for conventional breakwaters. In particular, the need to address safety and increased volume requires materials to be user-friendly and economical. Also, this type of coast protection structures typically requires slopes that are as steep and stable as possible to minimise volume and cost. The reefs are to be primarily for beach protection but activities such as surfing were identified as important issues in the design process. Coast Protection, ecological and tourism benefits of Artificial Surfing Reef are examine, as are prospects for using the artificial surfing reef in Algarve as an alternative solution for coastal protection.
